It’s All in the Details This Issue

I love skiing in Jackson, and even better is when après ski is at the private, luxurious Caldera House–story in “Travel by Design.”

Each year, Mountain Living receives hundreds of home submissions from architects, interior designers and homeowners with projects and homes in the Mountain West to fill 18-25 feature story positions throughout the year. Our editorial team reviews each pitch and eliminates those that haven’t met our editorial requirements: Most importantly, a homeowner release form must accompany the pitch giving us permission to run the home, homes can’t be for sale, and they must be a primary home or retreat—no spec homes or vacation rentals.

Once the requirements are met, our team looks for special elements in the pitches—what sets this home apart from the other homes we are seeing? Sometimes a home is stunning but it might feel like we have seen it before. We want our readers to feel that what they are seeing is fresh, something they’re experiencing for the first time. When I think about what this secret sauce is that lands a home one of the coveted feature spots, it’s in the details.

In our January/February 2023 issue, a home outside Gunnison was four years in the making because the homeowners wanted to get it just right, page 152. Built with stone, chink-and-plank walls and hand-scribed timber, it was lovingly crafted with details that set it apart from other homes.

In “Stream Song,” page 162, a Park City home designed by Mark Bates was situated on a very compact building pad bordered by a stream and wetlands. Bates visited the site numerous times to understand the sun’s path, the fall of moonlight and the stream’s sounds. The resulting home captures view corridors in every direction. The homeowner attributes the home’s beauty to that attention to detail and the endless views.
