The holidays are a wonderful time to welcome family and friends into your mountain home. True, it does take a little planning and effort, but warm hospitality and a welcoming atmosphere almost always set the stage for a memorable time. When hosting guests at home, there are a few key things that can help your visitors feel comfortable and welcomed. Here, we tackle a few common questions people have.

Where will guests stay?

Think strategically about where your guests will stay. If you don’t have a designated guest room, you may need to get creative to ensure you have enough space for everyone.  Sometimes repurposing a basement or spare office can create that extra room you need. Prioritize comfort and do what you can to make the space feel special. Just remember, no one likes sleeping on an uncomfortable pull-out sofa or cot. A terrible night’s sleep can definitely put a damper on the holiday spirit. Inflatable air mattresses have come a long way and are definitely a more comfortable option.

Help guests feel comfortable and welcome by anticipating their needs before they arrive. Make sure their intended space is clean and organized. Utilize attractive baskets and bins to clear out your clutter or, alternatively, provide space for guests’ belongings. Adding in an extra table or bench to create a designated space for luggage is a thoughtful touch. Layer holiday-themed dresser scarves or table runners to protect your furniture to infuse a dash of holiday spirit. Fun conversation-starter coasters will not only prevent beverage rings on surfaces, they will set a lighthearted tone. Finally, most mountain environments are particularly dry, so be sure to provide an attractive water pitcher and glasses on the nightstand.

In the sleeping areas, special guest linens can set the stage with an inviting ambiance that will make your guests feel truly at home. Comfy seasonal-themed sheets topped by a luxurious duvet or extra downy comforter can make a world of difference for tired travelers. Add a few holiday throw pillows for a festive touch and toss an inviting throw at the foot of the bed to accommodate mid-day snoozes.

Clear away personal items and make sure the space is sparkling clean. Then stock your guest bathroom with soft, fluffy towels and extra essentials they may need such as soaps, shampoos and other toiletry items. Make sure you have plenty of paper supplies and include an aromatic holiday candle. Provide cozy robes and slippers if you have new or freshly laundered extras.
