What attracts people to the West is the desire to reconnect with nature and to dwell in an environment that brings them peace and solace. This property, selected by the client for the stunning natural beauty and intimacy of its surroundings, was an ideal setting for a retreat.

From the beginning, creating an environment of calm and serenity was of utmost importance. The simplicity of the home’s architecture, a one-story structure, allows it to blend harmoniously with the surrounding landscape while showcasing the unparalleled views.

The primary guiding principle of the project was simplicity: simplicity of architecture, of line and material selection, of furnishings, and of landscaping. The client was interested in quality over quantity, so the extended team, including WRJ, the architect, builder and landscape architect, approached this project from this “less is more” perspective.

But, of course, the simpler the design, the more important the attention to detail becomes. This home was designed to capture the nuance of intricate abundant details which reveal themselves in the exploration and discovery of the home and elements that connect back to the natural environment. Below, we share some of the remarkable details of Mountain Living’s 2023 Home of the Year.

For the interior we wanted a tone-on-tone palette. The textures and nuances within that color palette helped create a feeling of serenity. Critical to the decision making process was ensuring the materials within the home connected deeply to the Western design vernacular inside and out.
