Connect with nature anytime of the day or night by establishing a natural bridge between the interior and exterior of your home. The experts at Vertical Arts offer these helpful tips to harmoniously blend the indoors with outdoors, allowing homeowners to enjoy extended hours of summer weather.

First, consider how you would like to connect your indoor living area to the outdoors. Homeowners want outdoor spaces that feel like a continuation of their indoor living spaces. Opening walls physically connect inside to outside. “Having one large opening truly allows you to blur the lines between inside and outside,” Partner and Owner Sarah Tiedeken O’Brien of Vertical Arts explains. Floor-to-ceiling, bi-folding doors that open up an entire wall are a good option.

Next, plan out the design and furnishings of the space. Customize the outdoor space with durable fabrics hardy enough for harsh weather. Select furniture that is both durable and versatile so it can be moved around to accommodate different group sizes and purposes. Also, choose color palettes that naturally flow from inside to out. “Furnish the spaces with complementary pieces and color palettes that will allow the two areas to visually flow together,” says Tiedeken O’Brien.  “We love to use outdoor-ready fabrics on the furnishings just inside which allows them to be super durable and friendly to the indoor-outdoor flow.”

Also, protection from the outdoor elements is important when planning an outdoor space. “Cover keeps you protected from the elements while also providing opportunities for hanging heaters, overhead lighting and architectural detailing,” says Tiedeken O’Brien.

Finally, consider comfort items that will allow the space to comfortably be used and enjoyed for the better part of the year. Inspired lighting, heaters and fire pits can make the space as functional and stylish as the inside rooms. A hot tub can also add to your dreamy outdoor oasis and is the perfect spot to unwind apres-ski.
