Let nature inspire your mountain home interiors

In the midst of winter, our thoughts turn to warmth and comfort as we seek refuge in our homes. And while there are many aspects of human comfort, there is a specific connection between our contentment and our kinship with nature; a connection noted authors, scientists and philosophers have been making for centuries.

According to E.O. Wilson, an American Biologist and Ecologist,“The secret to achieving our aesthetic, intellectual, cognitive, and even spiritual fulfillment is found in nature.” Similarly, Anthony Douglas Williams, in his book The Divine Pattern, proclaims, “There is a feeling of peace and serenity, found only in nature, that comforts the mind and energizes the soul”

This is sound advice, but how do we achieve this, particularly when we are indoors for large amounts of time, waiting out the chilly grasp of winter? One sure way is to use healthy, organic building materials, such as natural earth plaster, in our homes.

Janet Eickelman, of The Natural Wall, is an avid believer in the benefits of utilizing healthy building components, like natural earth plasters, to enhance the feeling of well-being in one’s living space. Natural plaster will bring your walls to life and literally bring life to your walls, creating a breathable environment. In addition, durable, earthen walls are non-toxic, as well as moisture and temperature controlling, all of which contribute to our level of comfort and wellbeing.

In addition to well-being, nature has also long been associated with beauty; an inherent human need demonstrated by our yearning to surround ourselves with pleasing, harmonious materials in our homes. As seen in this recent project completed by Janet Eickelman, winter’s essence is elegantly captured as shadows and light reflect perfectly off the earth-covered walls, softly enhancing the various nuances of color and texture that can only be achieved with natural plaster.

Whether your winter hues are earthy and cave-like (dark browns, warm grays, deep greens) or subdued pastels (off-white, soft taupe, pale blues), there are shades of natural clay plaster to complement your palette. Whatever your inspiration, enjoy the peace of winter in your home, as you contemplate the hope of spring, which is right around the corner. In the words of the great American Architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, “Study nature, love nature, stay close to nature. It will never fail you.”
